Diabetes: Signs, Prevention & Cure
.
Diabetes has been diagnosed as a chronic disease. The disease affects a person’s capability to manufacture insulin. Insulin is a hormone that allows cells to metabolize glucose. The deficiency of insulin results in an excess of blood glucose. A diabetic patient needs to monitor blood glucose levels and to take insulin injections. Diabetes has the potential to cause damage to the renal, neural and cardiovascular systems, besides creating a number of complications.
A diabetic patient may experience symptoms such as excessive thirst, urination and hunger. Diabetes also compromises the body’s capability to cure wounds and ulcers. Other symptoms if diabetes includes fatigue, weight loss and irritability.
Diabetes is basically of two types, namely, Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is a condition in which the body is incapable of manufacturing insulin. Type 2 diabetes is an acquired condition that is reversible in a large number of cases.
Type 1 Diabetes can be the result of various factors. The islets of langerhans in the pancreas that are responsible for the production of insulin are incapable of manufacturing the hormone. This condition is either acquired genetically or because the islets are damaged on account of environmental factors such as viral infections. Type 1 Diabetics need to take insulin injections. They have to follow a careful diet pattern.
The other form of Diabetes is called the Type 2 Diabetes. About 90% of diabetic patients are affected by type 2 diabetes.
Type 2 Diabetes is because of the body’s resistance to insulin. This form of diabetes is basically an acquired form of the disease although genetic propensity may increase susceptibility. It is basically due to improper nutrition, high consumption of sugar based foods and beverages and a sedentary lifestyle. It can be controlled by controlling the factors that are responsible for the onset of the disease in the first place and in many cases can be reversed.
Diabetes can be prevented but not cured. In order to prevent diabetes, it is necessary to monitor your diet, cut down or totally eliminate foods that either are rich in sugar or based on simple carbohydrates. Plenty of exercise and bringing down weight to manageable levels also help immensely in the management and prevention of the disease.
