. New Delhi:  Taxpayers will now have to procure a ' New Number ' for filing returns and making any communication with the Income Tax department. The unique Document Identification Number ( DIN ), on the lines of numbers like PAN and TAN, will be quoted on "every" income tax-related communication, including returns to be filed next year for the Financial Year 2010-11. According to the new guidelines brought out by the Central Board of Direct Taxes ( CBDT ), the DIN will be mandatory "in respect of every notice, order, letter or any correspondence" with the department, by the taxpayers. " The DIN will be generated by the I-T Department and will be useful, essentially, for error-free filing of tax returns, claiming refunds and other communication with the department by the assesses," a senior Finance Ministry official said. The 'Aykar Sampark Kendras' will hand out the DIN from this month,

Creams Used to Treat Eczema Could Make It Worse, Study Suggests ScienceDaily (Nov. 13, 2010) — New research at the University of Bath suggests that using emollient creams to relieve the symptoms of eczema could actually make the condition worse. The researchers, from the University's Department of Pharmacy & Pharmacology, have published a study in the British Journal of Dermatology showing that aqueous cream BP reduces the thickness of healthy skin over a period of four weeks, calling into question whether the cream should be used for treating eczema. Originally used as a wash product, aqueous cream BP is currently the most widely prescribed emollient for the treatment of dry skin conditions. It is used to moisturise the skin, improving flexibility and preventing cracking in the protective outer layer, called the stratum corneum. However, the cream contains a detergent, called sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), which can increase the permeability of the skin barrie

Bank regulator Reserve Bank of India (RBI) as well as banks are becoming more strict about individuals issuing cheques.  Very often, individuals sign cheques irrespective of the balance in their savings account, to keep away from the creditors. Or, for electronic clearing services or auto debit bill payments or investments, if they do not have sufficient balance. Insufficient balance The State Bank of India (SBI) plans to close the savings account if cheques are issued without sufficient funds in the account. “If four consecutive cheques bounce due to unavailability of funds, we may close your savings account,” confirms a senior SBI official. This move will act as a deterrent for account holders, who will be more careful when transacting through cheques, he adds. Private sector banks may soon follow suit. “

Taxpayers can now look forward to a faster redressal of grievances related to refunds and returns without the many visits to Income Tax offices as the department is all set to bring a number of its services online. The department is in the process of enhancing a host of taxpayer related services like filing of returns , grievances and matters related to vigilance on its existing webportal and will soon float a Request For Proposal (RFP) inviting competent software solutions firms to execute the job. "The Income Tax department will soon host a number of taxpayer friendly services on its webportal. The effort is to reduce the taxpayers time in dealing with the department and deliver services fast as compared to the usual time taken," a senior I-T official involved in the process said. According to its developers, the Social Media Sobriety Test is designed to prevent alcohol-related posting to social media sites such as Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and YouTube, the Daily Mail reported.
