Job After 15 Years with Pay

Only in India: Absent for 15 Years & Still Gets Job Back Imagine remaining absent from duty for 15 years and still retaining the job. And to top it, securing a court order for payment of half the salary for the period. This is the case of West Bengal resident S.N. Das, who was able to retain his job as assistant engineer with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) without attending office for 15 years. Besides, the Calcutta High Court also ordered the AAI to pay him salary for half the time. Though the state-run AAI agreed to re-instate Das, it approached the Supreme Court against having to pay him half the salary. The apex court struck down the high court ruling ordering the AAI to pay Das the salary. The apex court ruling was pronounced May 16, but released late last week. Das, an assistant engineer with the AAI at Kolkata airport, was transferred to Delhi in March 1985. He reported for duty at Delhi airport on March 19, 1985, but proceeded on 18-day leave from March 26 on account

Eating Habits

US Eats 5 Times More Than India Per Capita http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/3008449.cms Even as the world spins into a global food crisis, a popular theory — voiced by the likes of US President George W Bush and secretary of state Condoleezza Rice — is that the Chinese and Indians are responsible. The 'logic': due to zooming incomes, they are eating more, causing worldwide shortages. But is that true? Due to their huge populations, countries like India and China may appear to consume gigantic amounts of food. But the real elephant in the room that nobody is willing to talk about is how much each person gets to eat. And the answer will shock many. Total Food Grain consumption — wheat, rice, and all coarse grains like rye, barley etc — by each person in the US is over five times that of an Indian, according to figures released by the US Department of Agriculture for 2007. Each Indian gets to eat about 178 kg of grain in a year, while a US citizen consumes 1,046 kg.

Nuke Deal & India's Sovereignty

Nuke Deal Does Not Compromise India's SOVEREIGNTY: Abdul Kalam Former president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, one of the principal figures behind the May 1998 nuclear tests that shook the world, has said that India should "go ahead" with the civil nuclear deal with the United States as it does not compromise the country's sovereignty. In a rare interview, Kalam said that if at any time there was a fear that national security would be compromised by going ahead with the deal, "we can at any time withdraw (from it)". This was the first time that Kalam, who was among a handful of scientists who were at the nuclear explosion site at Pokhran on May 11 and 13 a decade ago in what was a highly secretive operation, has spoken out in favour of the deal that has been the subject of so much debate and political controversy in India . Kalam, who was then chief of the Defence Research and Development Organisation, was feted as a national hero, applauded and besieged for autographs

Indian Police Today :

NEW DELHI: In an incident that brought back the horrid memories of the rape of a college-going girl by a drunken policeman on Mumbai's Marine Drive in 2005. A 12-year-old girl was raped inside a moving car allegedly by a Delhi Police Traffic Constable and his friend on Thursday afternoon at Swaroop Nagar in the Outer district. The cop, Sanjeev Kumar, 26, has been arrested; there is no trace of his friend or the car. While confirming rape, the medical report says the constable wasn't drunk at the time of the crime. According to police sources, the girl was standing outside a temple at Nangli Poona in Swaroop Nagar, waiting for her family to join her after prayers. The accused constable came along with a friend in a Maruti 800 and pulled her inside. The car's windows had dark films on them, sources said, adding that Sanjeev raped the girl while his friend kept driving around the area and then they swapped roles. The duo then dumped the girl outside the temple and fled. Some

Self Appraisal

A little boy went into a drug store, reached for a soda carton and pulled it over to the telephone. He climbed onto the carton so that he could reach the buttons on the phone and proceeded to punch in a Tel Number. The store-owner observed and listened to the conversation: The boy asked the lady at other side, "Can you give me the job of cutting your lawn? The woman replied, "I already have someone to cut my lawn." Boy : "I will cut your lawn for half the price of the person who cuts your lawn now." The woman responded that she was very satisfied with the person who was presently cutting her lawn. The little boy found more perseverance and offered: I'll even sweep your curb and your sidewalk, so on Sunday you will have the prettiest lawn in all of Palm beach, Florida." Again the woman answered in the negative. With a smile on his face, the little boy replaced the receiver. The store-owner, who was listening all conversation, walked over to the boy and
