Suicides in Taiwan's Hon Hai Group.

U.S. firms probe Taiwan supplier after suicides TAIPEI, TAIWAN — Apple , Hewlett-Packard and Dell said Wednesday that they’re investigating working conditions at Taiwan’s Hon Hai Group after a mounting number of suicides at their contract manufacturer. Apple is “saddened and upset” by the suicides and has a team evaluating Hon Hai’s countermeasures, said Steve Dowling, a spokesman for the maker of iPhones and iPads. HP said it’s investigating Hon Hai’s practices and Dell said it’s examining reports on the world’s largest contract manufacturer, also known as Foxconn Technology Group. The probes add to the pressure on billionaire Chairman Terry Gou, who Wednesday opened Hon Hai’s biggest Chinese production site to the media to defend working conditions that some labor-rights groups describe as a “sweatshop.” The fallout threatens to disrupt a $40-billion-a-year (U.S.) operation that builds everything from iPhones to desktop computers and televisions. "Last year, 30 of them came from one coaching centre in Patna, capital of the impoverished north Indian state of Bihar. That may not seem like many, but for the Super 30 centre it's a pass rate of 100 percent," the magazine said in its latest issue.   &

Diabetes Halt in 6 Days

. Now, a daily shot can halt diabetes in 6 days NEW DELHI: It comes as a new hope for people with type-1 diabetics, fed up of taking lifelong insulin shots in their abdomen and thighs. In what is being termed as a major breakthrough, scientists are clinically trying a new drug which shows potential of stalling and reversing type-1 diabetes in less than one week's time. A drug, named Otelixizumab, that has to be given as a daily jab for six days in a row, could help preserve the patient's natural ability to produce insulin for years. It does so by halting damage to the pancreas, allowing it to carry on producing its own insulin. Type-1 diabetes, which tends to affect young people, more often occurs when the immune system starts to attack healthy tissues such as insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Once a person suffers from full-fledged type-1 diabetes, there is no other cure but lifelong insulin shots. Dr Anoop Mishra, head of the department of diabetes of Fortis Ho
