THE ONGOING CWG ARE ALL SET TO CREATE OVER FIVE LAKH JOBS
The promotional and sponsorship activities revolving around the ongoing Commonwealth Games (CWG) are likely to swell the coffers of the Delhi government. In fact, around Rs 4,500 crore is expected to be generated in terms of revenue. The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) has stated that this might push the GDP from Rs 1,17,000 crore to Rs 1,75,000 crore - a remarkable increase of 49 per cent.
Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC),privatelyowned hospitals in Delhi and NCR and Delhi International Airport are likely to earn revenues of over Rs 540 crore through increased inflow of foreign and domestic tourists.Much of this revenue increase is expected from the tour packages and medical tourism facilities. informs DS Rawat,Secretary General,Assocham.CWG 2010 is one of the biggest sporting events that India has hosted.History bears testimony to the fact that wherever major sporting events of this nature have been held they have benefited a range of sectors in the host country.CWG at one level transcends the actual sporting events and is about the experience that tourists take back to their home countries. The focus therefore,is also on showcasing Indias varied culture and heritage - a proposition that is bound to translate into fresh opportunities for the hospitality industry.
According to a recent Assocham report, the CWG with a sharp increase in terms of foreign tourists will generate employment opportunities for over five lakh people in sectors like aviation, hospitality, civil engineering, medical and eco-tourism.The report further stated that with the recent modernisation of the Delhi and Mumbai international airports along with the revamping of 35 metro airports, the airlines and airport industry will also create an additional 2.5 lakh jobs.
Sunil Yash Kalra,in his recent book published by Penguin Books India,Road to Commonwealth Games 2010 states: One has to only look back at the Beijing Olympics,2008,to understand the extent of the investment (around US$30 billion).Multiple sectors of the economy benefited from the event and this,in turn, impacted the most important stakeholders the people.Over two million job opportunities were created. It will be much the same with the London Olympics in 2012.In fact, the scale will be bigger and the extent of impact wider. As regards India, the impact will be farreaching.Besides modernisation of Delhis physical landscape and proliferation of real estate projects,it will leave India with a legacy of worldclass sports infrastructure.
A sporting event of this magnitude will also lead to hiring opportunities in the unorganised sector/ activities like ceremonies, dope control, image and look, legal and spectator control.Besides, the organising committee of CWG is likely to have a team of over 1,000 professionals supported by over 20,000 volunteers at the time of the Games, informs Kalra. He has also authored a book Commonwealth
Journey from Melbourne to New Delhi.
But there seems to be a concern about the sustainability level of these new jobs, especially because India is not known as a prime sporting nation that can continuously leverage the freshly created sporting infrastructure. To this,Kalra states in his book: In Melbourne and Manchester, where the Olympics and the CWG were held, respectively, almost 80 per cent of the jobs created were sustainable. Though the potential of CWG to create employment opportunities across sectors is substantial,he adds that these additional jobs will require development of technical skills.Similarly, importance of soft-skills cannot be overestimated.
Since the games would be held in and around Delhi, apart from Delhi, other nearby states like Rajasthan,Uttarakhand and Punjab will also be major beneficiaries in terms of revenue generation.
