Power Theft Cases in Andhra

Power Theft Cases to be Scrapped : HYDERABAD: Energy Minister Mohd. Ali Shabbir has said that all power pilferage cases up to 250 watts will be scrapped and the amounts due to the AP Transco/distribution companies from households and others in these cases totalling Rs 11.79 crore waived.
This decision was taken by Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy while reviewing power-related issues here on Saturday.
The Minister asked those booked for pilferage to apply for regular power connection under Rajiv Gandhi Grameena Vidyuth Yojana by paying Rs. 125 each. In case of those in urban areas, this expenditure would be borne by the Government.
He said these concessions would not apply to those cases involving pilferage of more than 250 watts. Many of them were big people and cases booked for theft of 1,000 watts numbered 19,000 involving Rs. 13 crores.
Mr. Shabbir said a ‘get-ready’ directive had been issued to gas-based projects in view of the possibility of Reliance gas being made available from July 15. These projects, accounting for a capacity of 2,000 MW, are idle now for want of gas. Once gas was available, they would be operated at full capacity and round-the-clock supply would be ensured to rural areas too.
The new 500-MW unit of Vijayawada station would be commissioned in September, and 210-MW fifth unit of Rayalaseema Power Station and the first unit (500 MW) of Bhoopalapalli by February next.
