How Safe is Your Bank Account? A Checklist

. . The recent failure of the Global Trust Bank begs the question: how can the average account holder assess the quality -- and therefore the safety -- of a bank? Keeping an eye on some basic pointers -- based on the financials of a bank that are accessible on the Internet -- can ensure peace of mind. The foremost concern should be the level of non-performing assets -- or loans that are not being repaid or serviced through interest payments on time -- in a bank. For a bank, a loan that it gives out is an 'asset' since it earns revenue, while a deposit is a 'liability' because it has to be repaid at some point in time. According to the Reserve Bank of India , an asset or loan becomes 'non-performing' or bad when it has not been serviced -- meaning, the interest and/or installment of principal has remained 'past due' or unpaid -- for more than 90 days. These could include term loans, overdraft, cash credit and bills purchased/discounted. On the other hand...

How Does A Microwave Oven Work?

A microwave oven uses microwaves, which are basically radio waves, to cook food. The commonly used frequency is roughly 2,500 MHz (2.5 GHz). Radio waves in this frequency range are absorbed by water, fats and sugars. When absorbed, they are converted directly into heat. They are not absorbed by most plastics, glass or ceramics. Metal reflects microwaves, which is why metal pans don't work well in an oven. The radio waves penetrate the food and excite water and fat molecules pretty much evenly throughout the food, unlike a conventional oven, where heat migrates toward the interior by conduction. In a microwave oven, there is heat everywhere all at once because the molecules are all excited together.

U.S. takes possession of Alaska

18 October, 1867: The U.S. formally takes possession of Alaska after purchasing the territory from Russia for $7.2 million, or less than two cents an acre. The Alaska purchase comprised 586,412 square miles, about twice the size of Texas, and was championed by William Henry Seward, the enthusiastically expansionist secretary of state under President Andrew Johnson. Russia wanted to sell its Alaska territory, which was remote, sparsely populated and difficult to defend, to the U.S. rather than risk losing it in battle with a rival such as Great Britain. Negotiations between Seward (1801-1872) and the Russian minister to the U.S., Eduard de Stoeckl, began in March 1867. However, the American public believed the land to be barren and worthless and dubbed the purchase "Seward's Folly" and "Andrew Johnson's Polar Bear Garden," among other derogatory names. Some animosity toward the project may have been a byproduct of President Johnson's own unpopularity. As ...

IIT : With Just 8 Marks (5%) in JEE Physics - AIR 4999.

TOI 12 Oct 2008 : In the IIT joint entrance examination of 2007, a score of 15% in mathematics was enough to make it to IIT-Kanpur. If you found that shocki ng, look at this year's figures. In 2008, students could join IIT-Kharagpur despite scoring no more than 5% in physics. ….. For the second year running, the reduction of subject cutoffs to single digits under a procedure introduced in 2007 has allowed less meritorious candidates to slip into IITs even in the general category. ….. This flies in the face of the seemingly reassuring statistics put out by IIT-Roorkee on its website in August stating that in the 2008 JEE conducted by it, the marks obtained by the last admitted candidate in the general category were 63 out of 162 in maths (39%), 72 in physics (44%) and 45 in chemistry (28%). ….. The website glossed over the fact that some of the admitted candidates who obtained higher aggregates (and, therefore, higher ranks) actually scored much lower marks in one or the other subj...

War Hero Waits for Promised Land - No Comments ?

CHANDIGARH: 1966 is a very long time ago but probably not ripe enough for Punjab government to fulfil a promise made to a veteran of the Indo-Pak war OF 1965. Kaka Singh, 79, lost his eyes during action at Khemkaran sector. Fired up by the selfless role played by him for his country, the state jumped to announce a prize of 10 acre for the gritty soldier. Three decades on, it took a Punjab and Haryana High Court order of January 30 to direct the state to keep its word. While that may have brought a flicker of hope but Singh is yet to set foot on the promised land as the government is still to allot that plot. However, this is not the first time that a former soldier or his widow has faced hardship in getting land promised to them in the heat of the moment. A resident of Zirakpur, Singh was a sapper with Bengal Engineers Group (BEG) Roorkee. He joined the Army on September 18, 1954, and was discharged on September 17, 1970, as a war casualty with 100% visual disability. Recalling the fa...

Tips to Deal with Office Politics

..... Backbiting, rear-licking, jealousy are often the words you use within the confines of office cubicles, while discussing the politics of your work place, RIGHT? It is no new rule to treat your superiors with adequate salaams. Politics is a reality you cannot avoid; species such as devilish bosses, backbiting colleagues and annoying subordinates will always be omnipresent. The trick is how you work around them to make your career skyrocket. Politics in some workplaces can get vicious though — and we’re not referring to our netas’ offices. Power and influence-management in your company will always be a part of your career, whether you have the temperament for it or not. While some of us say they don’t want to get ‘caught up’ in politics at work, most HR experts argue that playing the game is crucial to your career success. By not getting involved, you may find your talents ignored and your success limited, and you may feel left out of the loop. Politics gets nasty when an emp...

J&K Militants Are Terrorists : Zardari (Pak PM)

********* In a statement which has warmed the cockles of Indian hearts as much as it has created a ruckus in his own country, Pakistan president As if Ali Zardari has described militants operating in J&K as " TERRORIST ". This is the first time a top Pakistani leader has dared to state this in public and vindicate the stand of the Indian establishment. While New Delhi is still wondering about the real power centre (government, ISI or army) in Pakistan, senior government officials nonetheless seemed delighted with Zardari's interview to Wall Street Journal in which he also said that Pakistan did not look upon INDIA as a threat. "India has never been a threat to Pakistan. I, for one, and our democratic government is not scared of Indian influence abroad," Zardari said in the interview. "Whatever the situation in Pakistan, Zardari is the leader of his country and it is important for us that he makes the right noises. He seemed very positive in New York to...

Why India Stands INSULATED from Global Financial Crisis

………. The collapse of the mighty global financial system has triggered a series of chain reactions in India, but the impact is not going to be as widespread as earlier imagined. The collapse of the mighty global financial system has triggered a series of chain reactions in India, but the impact is not going to be as widespread as earlier imagined. The reasons are numerous. First, the subsidiaries of collapsed investment banks like Lehman are being bailed out by entities like Nomura of Japan. This includes the 2,500-strong back office operations in Mumbai, apart from the smaller securities set up. Similarly, American Insurance Group (AIG) in India has a tie-up with the ever reliable Tatas who have given thumbs up to all consumers who were worried about their insurance carried out through this vehicle. Second, and even more significant, is the fact that the conservative approach to reforms in the financial services sector has ensured that the tremors of earthquakes in the US are being fel...

Etiquette Today ?

शिस्टाचार / शिष्टता / सभ्याचार / सभ्यता / रीति Have you ever really studied the people who work with you or indeed around you? If you have, you will probably come to one conclusion. That today's workforce can be compared to a well-mixed salad: of young and old, male and female, those that are highly educated and those that are less so. This diverse mix means that each person brings to the work environment his or her own set of beliefs, values and expectations. This also means that there is going to be more than one way of looking at a situation or tackling a problem — all of which make good sense. But such variety in the workplace makes it imperative for supervisors and co-workers to be sensitive to different communication and working styles and this is where etiquette becomes so important. Let's look at this whole business of etiquette another way. If you have a bunch of people who are constantly snapping and snarling at each other, you will witness company output suffering. I...

F A M I L Y

FAMILY & ETIQUTTE [Courtesy : Rahul Hareesh / Shahzad Alam - Thanks To BOTH Of YOU - आप दोनों को धन्यवाद् !!! ] I ran into a stranger as he passed by, "Oh excuse me please" was my reply. He said, "Please excuse me too; I wasn't watching for you." We were very polite, this stranger and I. We went on our way and we said goodbye. But at home a different story is told, How we treat our loved ones, young and old. Later that day, cooking the evening meal, My son stood beside me very still. When I turned, I nearly knocked him down. "Move out of the way," I said with a frown. He walked away, his little heart broken. I didn't realize how harshly I'd spoken. While I lay awake in bed, God's still small voice came to me and said, "While dealing with a stranger, common courtesy WE use, but the family WE love, WE seem to abuse. Go and look on the kitchen floor, You'll find some flowers there by the door. Those are the flowers he b...

ऐसे वीर सिपाही को शत-शत नमन ओ जाने वाले हो सके तो लौट के आना ...At a time when most fathers would have stayed beside their sick son's hospital bed, tend to his blood transfusion and ensure that the dengue died down, Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma rushed to Jamia Nagar from the hospital to raid a house where terrorists were holed up। He hadn't gone home for three days, rushing from office to hospital and back and his wife expected him to return on Friday evening finally. Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc.

The New York Times : Friday, September 19, २००८ http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/business/companies/lehman_brothers_holdings_inc/index.html?excamp=GGBUlehmannews&WT.srch=1&WT.mc_ev=click&WT.mc_id=BI-S-E-GG-NA-CT-lehman_news Lehman Brothers was founded in 1850 by two cotton brokers in Montgomery, Ala। The firm moved to New York City after the Civil War and grew into one of Wall Street's investment giants, despite period brushes with death. On Sept. 14, 2008, the investment bank announced that it would file for liquidation after huge losses in the mortgage market and a loss of investor confidence crippled it and it was unable to find a buyer. Lehman's slow collapse began as the mortgage market crisis unfolded in the summer of 2007, when its stock began a steady fall from a peak of $82 a share. The fears were based on the fact that the firm was a major player in the market for subprime and prime mortgages, and that as the smallest of the major Wall Street firms, it f...

Lehman : All About ?

The history of Lehman Brothers parallels the growth of the United States and its energetic drive toward prosperity and international prominence. What would evolve into a global financial entity began as a general store in the American South.Henry Lehman, an immigrant from Germany, opened his small shop in the city of Montgomery, Alabama in 1844. Six years later, he was joined by brothers Emanuel and Mayer, and they named the business Lehman Brothers. The firm, thus, was founded in 1850. Cotton was the cash crop of the time, and the Lehmans accepted it from the local farmers as currency to settle accounts. The brothers traded the cotton for cash or merchandise, becoming brokers for buyers and sellers of the crop.In 1858, they opened an office in New York, which was the commodity trading center of the country. The Civil War disrupted the Lehmans' business. When hostilities ended, the brothers moved north and concentrated their operations in New York, where they helped establish the C...
